If you're considering coming in costume (and you should), here's a practical guide to what works, what to buy, and what the rules are.

Is Cosplay Required?

No. Plenty of attendees will come in regular clothes. But cosplay is strongly encouraged, and the environment rewards it — there will be dedicated photo zones, a venue full of similarly dressed people, and a general atmosphere where showing up as a Mandalorian will feel completely normal.

What Themes Work at SaberCon?

The event's aesthetic leans sci-fi and saber-culture, so the most natural fits are:

Classic archetypes that work well:

  • Jedi-style robes and tunics (any colour, original or inspired)
  • Sith-inspired dark robes and armour
  • Bounty hunter armour (Mandalorian-style, Boba Fett-inspired, or original designs)
  • Imperial officers and trooper-inspired costumes

Original characters (OC) also welcome. You don't need to replicate anything specific.   • Lightsaber props are welcome — see the saber-specific guidelines below
  • Costumes should be manageable in an indoor convention space — extremely large wing spans or structures may be asked to adjust in crowded areas

Lightsaber Props: What's Allowed

  • Display and cosplay sabers — all welcome anywhere on the floor
  • Polycarbonate dueling-grade blades — permitted for use in designated dueling zones only; must remain deactivated outside these areas
  • Metal hilt props — acceptable; no sharpened edges
  • Keep sabers sheathed or deactivated during MRT travel — Singapore's public transport guidelines apply

Where to Buy Cosplay in Singapore

For Fabric Costumes and Robes

Spotlight (multiple locations) — solid source for fabric if you're making your own. The Jurong East and Parkway Parade outlets have the best selection.

Haji Lane / Arab Street — independent fashion boutiques sometimes stock or can source unusual textiles and outerwear suitable for robe-style costumes.

Taobao (via forwarding services like Ezbuy or Oops) — the most cost-effective route for ready-made robes, tunics, and armour pieces. Allow 2–3 weeks for delivery.

For Armour and Props

Shopee and Lazada — both platforms have active cosplay sections with Singapore-based sellers. Filter by local stock for faster delivery.

SaberCon itself — the vendor marketplace on the day will include prop makers and accessory sellers. If you want to add to your costume on the day, budget for it.

For Lightsabers

The SaberCon Supply Depot (singaporesabercon.com/collections/sabers) stocks sabers directly. The Forge workshop (from $198) is the premium option — you build your own. For a display prop, the marketplace will have options at various price points.

Practical Tips for Convention Cosplay

Comfort matters more than screen accuracy. You'll be in costume for potentially 8+ hours in a warm indoor venue. Prioritise breathable fabric and comfortable footwear over total accuracy.

Bring a bag. You'll likely buy things at the marketplace. A drawstring bag worn under a robe or a small backpack that fits the aesthetic is worth thinking about in advance.

Plan for photos. Spontaneous photos happen constantly. Think about which angles your costume looks best from and where your saber sits in the frame.

Arrive dressed or change on site. *SCAPE has public bathroom facilities for changing. If commuting by MRT in costume, be aware that saber-wielding Mandalorians on the North-South Line will attract attention — which most attendees consider part of the fun.
